Installation Overview

The Home Fairway ships ready to mount, with the brackets included. We do not install it. Most of our customers have an electrician hang it, and a handyman service can do it too. This page is the overview: what the job involves, what to check before anyone drills, and what your installer will need. The full installation guide for your size, with every dimension and drawing, is free on request.

Before anyone drills

  • Width. You need your screen size plus 4 1/8 in of clear wall, outside bracket to outside bracket. On the Fairway 12 that is 148 1/8 in. Check it at mounting height, not at the floor.
  • Depth. The side screens run 100 1/2 in bracket to bracket toward the golfer. Allow about 9 ft from the wall for the full enclosure.
  • Height. Confirm your ceiling height and the clearance you need for a full swing. In a garage, measure to the underside of the door track. The garage door tracks guide covers the common layouts.
  • Structure. Find out what is behind the drywall: wood studs, joists or masonry. Note lights, sprinklers and opener rails near the mounting line.
  • Power. Each of the three motorized screens has its own 120V plug-in power lead. They do not need three separate outlets: plan where the leads will reach power, and we recommend plugging them into a surge protector. The leads exit the left end as standard. Keep the power point somewhere hidden, above or behind the housings or in the ceiling cavity, so no cord shows when the screens are up.

Not sure about any of these? Send us your measurements before you order and we will check them, free. The fit calculator runs the same numbers.

What your installer will need

  • Stud finder, 25 ft tape measure, a level 24 in or longer, drill and driver, bits sized to the fasteners, pencil and painter's tape, ladders
  • Structural wood screws or lag screws for stud and joist mounting, or properly rated heavy-duty toggle bolts where there is no stud
  • A helper. The screen assemblies are long and awkward to lift alone

The 3 in by 5 in mounting brackets are in the box. Fasteners are not, because the right fastener depends on what you are mounting into. Every bracket lands on a stud or joist, or on a rated heavy-duty toggle bolt. Never drywall alone.

How the install goes

  1. Locate studs or joists at each bracket position and mark them. Confirm any doubtful stud with a small pilot hole.
  2. Mark the main screen brackets from the centerline of your hitting bay, and confirm the full outside-to-outside dimension with one continuous tape measurement. Check level across the run.
  3. Choose which side the power comes from. Left is standard. If your outlet is on the right, the main screen can be mounted flipped and its motor direction reversed so the fabric still drops on the golfer's side. We will walk your installer through that.
  4. Mount the main screen brackets snug, re-measure and re-check level, then tighten and hang the main screen.
  5. Mount the side screen brackets tight to the main assembly, with the side screens running 100 1/2 in bracket to bracket toward the golfer, parallel and square to the main screen.
  6. Set the side screen offset the same on both sides. 7 in is the minimum, measured from the inside face of the main screen bracket to the inside face of the side screen bracket. Beginners, or anyone with a wider miss, should go wider for more side protection. Decide this before drilling.
  7. Final check. Re-measure everything, confirm level and square (equal diagonals on the side screen layout), then tighten.
  8. First run. Lower and raise each screen slowly once, watching for rubbing or snags, before normal use.

After it is up

  • Re-check fastener tightness after the first week, then now and then.
  • Stop and inspect the mounts if you notice unusual noise, sag, misalignment or loose hardware.
  • Use clean balls and clean club faces. Range grime transfers onto the screens. Spot-clean with mild soap and water.
  • Keep everyone clear of the hitting area while a golfer is swinging.

Dimension drawings and spec sheets

Each spec sheet has a plan view, a front elevation and a side section with the published dimensions for that size, plus the full specifications. Print one for your installer. The drawings are schematic, so field-verify every dimension before drilling.

Fairway 12 plan view: 12 ft 4 1/8 in clear wall, 100 1/2 in side screens, about 108 in enclosure depth
